Diane Stanley
1943-
Biography Diane Stanley was born on December 27, 1943 and was raised in Abilene, Texas. Her father was a Navy Pilot and flew in World War II. Her mother was a writer. She is an only child. Her parents divorced shortly after she was born. The family moved to New York City. Her mother’s first mystery novel, Murder Leaves a Ring was published in 1950. Diane Stanley’s first book was years later and it was named, The Conversation Club. It was published in 1983. They wrote The Last Princess together. Diane Stanley’s mother became ill with tuberculosis when she was nine years old. Her mother was hospitalized and she was sent to live in Abilene with her aunt and uncle. When her mother recovered they moved to LaJolla, California. Diane enjoyed the beach and walking her poodle Poochie(short for Puccini Barculus Ferocious Atrocious Gregarious Stanley I) Diane’s mother became ill again, so she finished high school in Abilene. She then attended Trinity University in San Antonio and discovered she had an interest in drawing. She spent a year at the University of Texas and another year at the Edinburgh College of Art in Edinburgh, Scotland. While attending college in Scotland, she traveled to Russia. This is where the inspiration for her first Russian themed biography began: Peter the Great. Diane Stanley is married to Peter Vennema. They have three grown children. Her husband often illustrates and writes with her. She has written and illustrated over thirty-five books for children of all ages. She has received numerous awards.
